Our family is extremely impressed with the amazing game play of the Royal Hospital board game.
Royal Hospital is a euro style medical themed game with card drafting, tracks for progression, income driven, point salad, and end game bonuses. The rules are easy to understand, while still providing a strategic game with many options. It took us under 40 minutes to read and play. That is impressive for such a big euro game.
The quality of the components are truly impressive, especially knowing that this is the prototype. The main board and individual player boards are duel layered. The cards do not bend and are easy to read, while vibrantly illustrating the images. The plastic pieces and metals coins coincide with the theme and elevates the experience.
The mechanics are mostly driven by card drafting, marketplace, upgrading of individual player boards, advancing on several tracks, and healing patient cards. The game progresses in complexity and challenge throughout each round. The first few rounds you take care of 1 to 2 patients and progresses up to 4 patients in the last few rounds.
There are 4 tracks to advance on:
1. Ambulance Track- Allows you to gain benefits as you pass each space
2. Quality of Care Track – End game bonuses
3. Prestige Track – End of each round players gain points determined on the track number
4. Research Track – Collect resources and advance on player boards. Some of the research tracks also advances other tracks.
We are impressed with the many ways to score points, how the theme tied into the game flawlessly, the smooth progression, the strategic mechanics of the game, and the balance of gameplay. And we wouldn’t be surprised if Royal Hospital wins many awards. It is a great game that we were honored to cover.
