Check out the Playthrough of the Brian Boru: High King of Ireland Board Game by Osprey Games. This game is for 3-5 players – ages 14+. Standard game play is approximately 60-90 minutes.
Brian Boru is a hand management, trick taking game where players are trying to gain the most influence and majorities in regions. The winner of the trick gains the town in play and the corresponding action on the card. The remaining players are still able to do the action on their card, however it is the action located on the bottom for less gains. There is also end game scoring for having the majority in a region and the scoring token switches hands throughout the game based on the majority at the time.
Each player obtains their hand through drafting at the beginning of the round by picking two cards and passing the remaining cards to the player on their left and this continues until all cards have been chosen. These cards are used for the trick taking, with four suits, one of which being wild. The winner of the trick takes the primary action located on the top of the card and the losers take the secondary action located on the bottom of the card.
At the end of each round players earn points and benefits for the Marriage, Viking and Church areas. Players with the highest location on the marriage track, most Viking tokens, or Church discs get the most benefits. These area are very beneficial and help players to gain more towns, gain coins, and more.
The game is played over three rounds in a three player game and each hand consists of 8 cards. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins.
